South Nation Conservation works with its partner municipalities along the South Nation, St. Lawrence and Ottawa Rivers to provide advanced notice of flooding and low water conditions through the provincial Flood Forecasting and Warning and Low Water Response programs.

Current Watershed Conditions, Flood, and Drought Messages:

 FLOOD OUTLOOK

March 18th, 2026

South Nation Conservation (SNC) advises that the Flood Watch of March 16th is being downgraded to a Flood Outlook Statement.

Weather Forecast: Environment Canada (ECCC) forecasts a return to seasonal temperaturesof single digit highs above zero during daytime hours, and single digit lows below zero overnight for the next four days. Warmer temperatures and up to 25 mm of rain is expected on March 22nd which may lead to minor increases in water levels and flows.

Environmental Conditions: Ground conditions are currently frozen but will be in a state of elevated saturation when thawed. Most of the snowpack has melted away, although some remains in shaded and forested areas. Most river and tributary systems are open and clear of ice. Water levels and flows continue to decline from the peaks observed in early March.   

It is anticipated that the brief warming and rain forecasted will have minor impacts to levels and flows, and that they will continue to decline for the remainder of March.  

Risks: Rivers across the jurisdiction are still experiencing elevated water levels and faster flows with slippery or unstable banks.

ACTION: Residents are advised to exercise extreme caution when near rivers and waterbodies due to increasing river flows and slippery conditions. Any ice-covered bodies of water are considered unsafe. Parents are encouraged to explain these dangers to their children.

Residents in flood prone or low-lying areas, historically susceptible to flooding, should take the necessary precautions to protect their property.

Please ensure:

  • Sump pump is clear, in good working condition and has a backwater valve on it.
  • Easy access to portable backup generator and pump.
  • Downspouts are clear and the outlet is at least 3 m from the dwelling.
  • Driveway culverts are clear of debris and drain well.
  • Securing items that might float away as flows increase.

Duration: This flood outlook statement is in effect until March 25th, 2026 at 5 PM or until an update has been issued.

SNC monitors the water levels and weather forecasts as part of the Flood Forecasting and Warning Program. Updates are provided as conditions change.
